Imrpoved export settings for different formats and functions were the most important requirements of our customers for this version.

Improved Export

Data export from the AdminTool has been enhanced in many ways. It is now possible to decide weather to export textures and colors or not. In addition, metadata can be selectively exported so confidential metadata doesn't need to be removed of a data set. Export profiles can be created, which allows a quickly change between export variants. In addition, the user has the option to export an export protocol that provides various information on the exported scene.

Customers of our ViewService can now define a web map service when exporting a web visualization to Threejs. This Web Map Service is then integrated for navigation support. Likewise, the creation of a City Compact application was facilitated. It is no longer necessary to provide a password for the export and if a password is given it only needs to match a reasonable level of security.

Import and export of rules

It is possible to export and import rules. This facilitates the dissemination of rules in the Admin Tool. Click on a rule with right click and choose the appropriate menu item.

User meeting 2016

Also in 2016, we invite our customers to a user meeting in Darmstadt. This year it starts on April the 12th and ends on April the 13th. The meeting is aimed at the users of CityServer3D and AdminTtools. Registration deadline is April the 1st, and the participation is free.

Import attributes with CSV

With our new recipe the automatical import of metadata has been improved. With a csv-file like the one in the image on the left you can attach attributes to multiple objects with one click.

Tiled Export

The AdminTool provides a tiled export. After configuring the parameter in the export wizard the AdminTool automatically creates the folder hirarchy and exports the objects in the given format. You can reach this function via File -> Export. After configuring the filename and path you can click on "next" and make additional configuration, such as the tiled export.

Visibility analysis

With this new function our customer has the possibility in performing visibility analysis of their geo data. Required is a digital terrainmodel in grid format or a triangulated terrainmodel which can be converted to a grid with the CityServer3D function (object -> resample). After loading a compatibly grid the visibility analysis function can be found at "Window -> Show view -> Viewshed analysis"

The result can be shown in two different ways: A 2D visualsiation of the terrain model with green areas showing the spots from where the camera position would be visible (left image) and a 3D visualisation where those green areas are matched onto the terrainmodel as its texture (right image). The user can decide the point for evaluation with the current camera position.

New web visualisation

Our product ViewService got an advanced technology. The visualisation framework has bee replaced for more performance while still beeing plugin-free. The server has a new function where the entire database content can be konverted and optimized for the webvisualisation. The function is accessible via "CityService3D Web Viewer" on the server interface.

The Button "Rebuild" rebuilds the entire database and the button "Launch Viewer" visualizes the scene in the browser. The function is going to get improved in upcoming versions, for example with a layer filter. With this filter some layers can be excluded from the rebuild process which will improve the performance even more.

New component: CityCompact

From this very moment on, the new component CityCompact, which is going to be delivered to each of our long-term customers, is included in the CityServer3D. Using CityCompact, you can export the currently presented / opened scene in the AdminTool and thus create a stand-alone application. CityCompact produces an independent 3D viewer that opens the selected scene automatically, once it is started.

First, you need to upload a scene in(to) the AdminTool, after that you select the menu option File/Export as CityCompact application…. The opened scene is going to be exported together with the 3D Viewer into a repository of your choice.

The CityCompact Viewer does neither need additional software nor internet connection. This is why it is perfectly suitable for e.g. running on a notebook during presentations or for the dissemination of data.

Data protection

The CityCompact naturally contains functionalities to protect your data when it is shared with third parties. * The exported scene can be protected by using a password so that unauthorized persons do not have any access to it. The product produced by the CityCompact encrypts your data by the use of a secure AES algorithm. * You can equip your data with a watermark in order to be able to prove its origin at any time.

Watermark

The CityServer3D AdminTool in the new version 4.0 offers enlarged functionalities concerning the integration of a watermark into an exported dataset. By doing so, a proof of origin can be delivered at any time so that the owner of a dataset can surely be identified.

A watermark is an invisible markup added to your 3D data while the 3D data is changed to a minimum. The resulting inaccuracy is negligibly small and remains invisible for the viewer. But it can be used for the indication, if a particular person has marked the dataset due to sophisticated algorithms. This is how ownership and origin can be proven.

Select menu option File/Create watermark… in the AdminTool in order to produce a special file which contains your personal watermark. This file should be kept well for being able to add your personal watermark to exported dataseta. Furthermore, you are going to need the file for the proof of origin.

Open a scene in the AdminTool and export it as a file selecting File/Save as… or File/Export…. Press the Continue button in the wizard in order to find the options for watermarks. Enter the formerly created watermark file, there, and finally press Finish for the integration of the watermark into the exported file.

Improved graphical rule editor

Automated processes can be visualized with the help of the graphical rule editor within the CityServer3D AdminTool. Besides the definition of the data sources it is possible to define and save the rules, consist of simple steps. Version 4.0 of the graphical editor offers extended functionalities.

As we received feedback from our customers in production mode, we have been able to add several useful functionalities so that working processes can be facilitated/enhanced.

Other

Graphical rule editor

With the new graphical editor in the CityServer3D AdminTool is it now possible to map automatic processes. In the product view you can define not only the data sources but also the rules containing several simple workflow steps.

Currently there are various workflow steps, which you can combine in the rule editor with a click. E.g. it is possible to colorize all objects of one type in the city model, like buildings or trees, or objects with a certain level of details. This process can be saved and executed whenever it is required. It allows the integration of different data sources into a common data basis.

In the future versions we will develop further workflow steps, strongly considering customers’ requirements.

First steps at the welcome page

At the newly established welcome page of the CityServer3D AdminTool you will find the function “First Steps” which explains the usage of the AdminTool introducing an example project. The welcome page can be easily deactivated by removing the according checkmark.

The welcome page will be continuously developed in the future. Thus, you should time to time take a look at it choosing “Help/Welcome page” in the menu.

Improved visualisation of the 2D map

The 2D view in the AdminTool uses as a standard the maps from OpenStreetMap. For the visualisation of the basis data we use now MapQuest, which leads to an appealing and homogeneous map portrayal. Besides this MapQuest offers several distributed download server for the maps making the portrayal faster.

Upon request you can still embed own WMS as a map basis.

Faster document-oriented database relation

In the last CityServer3D version we introduced the usage of document-oriented databases for the 3D city model data storage. One of the biggest advantages of this data storage type is that it is faster than relational databases.

We are happy to report that we succeeded in making the MongoDB relation even faster.

Do you have questions or would like to discuss any specific requirements? Feel free to contact us. Our team will be happy to help you.

Enjoy working with the CityServer3D!

The CityServer3D is used in this project to manage 3D city models and to visualize underground structures like gelogy, tunnels, basements, and others. The workshop will be held in German.

The event will be a good opportunity for domain experts to share their experience in the following areas:

  • Semantic integration of 3D city models and underground structures

  • Unique visualization techniques to display this data in an integrated way

  • New ways to navigate through underground in 3D

  • Support of analyses and simulations

Apart from that, already elaborated design concepts will be presented.

The "DeepCity3D" project aims at providing software tools that use standardized formats (like CityGML, GeoSciML and OGC-conform web services) to integrate and visualize 3D city models and underground data. More information can be found on our [permalink id="204" text="project site"].
